TUTORIAL: HOW TO CREATE ABSTRACT MOTION BACKGROUNDS IN AFTER EFFECTS WITHOUT 3RD PARTY PLUGINS

This is a preview of the effect.

I have always wondered how people made great abstract motion graphics backgrounds and perhaps you are like me, without any clue. Lots of sites are selling their abstract backgrounds and if you would love to learn a technique or two and save money, then let's go!

Step 1

Create a new composition of any size

Step 2

create a new layer of a particular colour. This is going to be the layer we will duplicate and use to create the rest of the effect.

Step 3

With the layer selected, Go to Effects>Transition>CC Grid Wipe. This will apply the effect but you will not see anything yet unless you do some adjustments to some of the settings.

These are the settings we would alter to sell the effect:

  • completion
  • center
  • border
  • tiles
Before proceeding, duplicate your layer a few times by going to Edit>Duplicate. Change the colours of the duplicate layers to whatever cool colours you want.

Step 4

Choose the first layer and press the home button, to set the timeline at frame 0. Now under the effects tab, press the stopwatch next to completion to set a keyframe. Move to about 1 second and drag the slider to 100. You will now see the layer beneath.

Step 5

Press U to reveal the keyframes you created in the previous step and click on completion. This highlights both keyframes (they turn yellow). Go to Edit>Copy. Select the layers below the first layer and choose Edit>paste.

Step 6

Offset the position of the keyframes in the layers, to create your desired abstract background animation. You can then go ahead to add your own creative details by adjusting or even animating the other parameters of the effect.

You can show me what you created with this effect.

Heck, if you are a newbie, that is the place to start. You will learn a whole lot and have so much fun. Go ahead, don't be scared, try it.

2. If you are a beginner to motion graphics and use of Adobe After Effects, you may not know exactly where to look for help. Sometimes, you may not even know what to do, when you launch the application. Don't worry any longer because aetuts+ is just the place for you. This is a very big community of After Effects users, where you can access and submit your own content (for money) and receive or give constructive criticism. There are lots of techniques displayed by thousands of users from all over the world. A very quick way to learn about the various   plugins and the like.

Motion Graphics will never be the same again

Welcome to a world of infinite possibilities. If you can imagine it, I can create it to meet your tastes. I am a freelance motion graphics artist, who specializes in Adobe After Effects, 3ds Max, and Cinema 4D.

What do I do? You can call me a motion graphics artist, animator, creative, 3D or 2D animator, or simply a visual effects artist.

I believe it is about time we had a motion graphics community in Ghana. Let's connect and share ideas.
